The Indian government will provide Rs 2.1 billion for the construction of an embankment along the Kamala river in eastern Nepal, the Water Resources Ministry of India stated in a press release Wednesday, the Himalayan Daily reports from Indian capital New Delhi.

The fund will be channelised through the Indian External Affairs Ministry.

The Water Resources Ministry has stated that the eighth meeting of the sub-committee on embankment, which was held in Kathmandu from June 9 to 14, had stressed the need to construct the embankment on the Kamala river.

“Thousands of acres of arable land and human settlements in Nepal and India are inundated due to floods in these rivers in the rainy season,” the ministry stated in the press release, adding that the governments of India and Nepal have agreed to expand and construct embankments along the Lalbakaiya, Bagmati, Khando and Kamala rivers in eastern Nepal.

According to the ministry, embankment on Nepali side will be carried out on the recommendation of the embankment construction sub-committee. The Ganga Flood Control Commission, Patna, will handle the construction on the Indian side.

Construction works related to water resources development between Nepal and India slowed down in 2006, the ministry said.

“Works are underway to prepare a joint detailed project report on Sunkoshi and Saptakoshi projects as per the agreement between the two countries. Some study reports are also being drafted,” the ministry said.

A joint project office was set up in Nepal in August, 2004 for conducting a feasibility study of Sunkoshi and Saptakoshi rivers.
