A team of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has begun investigation of the site of Shivapuri National Park area where 49 detainees are said to have been cremated by Nepal Army of Bhairavnath Battalion Maharajgunj Kathmandu in 2003.
A six member team including specialist Dr. Harihar wasti made preliminary observation and investigation on the possible site of mass cremation today. The team collected possible remains of cremation such as burnt wood pieces, and ashes.
Dr. Wasti said hitherto investigation could not give clear indication whether or not the site was the place of mass human cremation.
NHRC Spokesperson Gauri Pradhan said the NHRC would conclude whether or not to continue the investigation following the report of the investigation panel.
Before this, the NHRC had held discussions with government, Nepal Science and Technology Academy on the process of investigation.
The NHRC and OHCHR had urged the government to seal the area of two kilometers to protect the site of possible mass cremation. A area with 30 meters breadth and two hundred meters length has been found covered with soil in the gorge.
Last year, the OHCHR had said the 39 persons were disappeared by Nepal Army of Bhairavnath Battalion Maharajgunj, Kathmandu in 2003.
