The Democratic senator Barack Obama on Wednesday has been elected as the 44th president of the United States of America, defeating Republican Senator John McCain.
The son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas, USA, Obama is the first black president of the USA.
According to reports, Obama won 297 seats and John McCain won 145 seats in the election. Any candidate needs to win at least 270 electoral college votes.
"Change has come," a report quoted Obama as saying, who was addressing a huge jubilant supporters at Grant Park in his home town of Chicago, after his historic victory.
"There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as president, and we know that government can't solve every problem. But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face," he added.
Reports said that Obama won California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin.
His competitor McCain had Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming. McCain also won at least 3 of Nebraska's five electoral votes, with the other two in doubt.
