United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Nepal has publicly noted the positive steps taken by the district administration, law enforcement agencies and the leaderships of the Maoist and the Madheshi Janaadhikar Forum (MJF) last weekend to avoid possible clash between cadres of the two groups in Gaur, Rautahat District.
A team of OHCHR-Nepal along with a team from the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN), had met with the Chief District Officer and police officials in Rautahat. 'OHCHR human rights officers noted that security personnel were carefully monitoring access to the town and searching people for weapons. The groups’ cadres were well disciplined and no serious incidents were reported.' said a press release issued by the OHCHR.
The two activities were initially planned to be held on the same day and there were serious concerns at the risk of violence. A clash between cadres of the two groups in March this year resulted in the tragic events that led to the killings of 27 CPN-M cadres.
