United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal (OHCHR) has said that there was need of reformation in public security system in Nepal.

Releasing a report on the human rights situation during the period of 13-29 February 2008 in Terai, OHCHR said that Nepal Police and Armed Police Force exercised restraint in the demonstrations than in the past. However, the security force used the force against the respect of the human rights, it said.

In the report, OHCHR said that six persons were killed in February protest and five of them were killed in police firing. OHCHR has also offered assistance to strengthen respect for human rights in public security institutions following February’s Terai protests.

'OHCHR recognizes that the government of Nepal, including the police, is making efforts to improve public security' a press release issued by OHCHR said quoting Richard Bennett, Representative of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal as saying.
