Taking under consideration the fast depletion of fuel stocks, Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has decided to supply petrol to dealers on every alternate day. Due to the strike in Terai, NOC is unable to manage adequate stock of fuels. NOC has expected that this step would help fuel reach most of the dealers within the city center.
The NOC has not received petroleum products from Raxaul since the last five days after Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum (MFJ) resumed indefinite strike. Petroleum products received through Raxaul makes over three fourth of the total imports. Even though the corporation has diverted its fuel receipts from Bhairahawa to the Valley, officials said that would not hold the situation for long.
A report quoted Dambar Basnet, chief of Thankot Depot, the NOC's distribution center in the Valley, as saying that the stock of petrol has slid to 40 percent of capacity, and the situation at Amlekhgunj depot was worse.
“We arranged security and took every step to escort some 50 tankers from Birgunj Wednesday, but couldn't complete the task due to rising tension there,” the report quoted Basnet as saying.
According to Sharad Bhandary, general secretary of Nepal Petroleum Dealers Association, the corporation's supply has been reaching a mere 25 percent of the total dealers operating in the Valley, and the remaining dealers have been forced to wait in turn.
Several petrol pumps have been shot down in the valley due to the lack of the adequate supply.
