As a part of its ongoing efforts to aid repayment of dues to the Indian oil supplier and end the festering fuel shortage in the country, the government on Monday have announced yet another hike in the prices of diesel, kerosene and the cooking gas.
After consulting the line ministries, Nepal Oil Cooperation (NOC) board of directors took the decision to this end.
As per the new rate, diesel will now cost Rs 61.30 per litre, kerosene Rs 61 a litre and cooking gas Rs 1,250 per cylinder for Kathmandu Valley and hilly areas. However, the price of cooking gas for the Terai belt from Jhapa to Rupandehi districts has been fixed at Rs 1,230.
An official at the NOC said that the rate of diesel and kerosene has been made equal following complaints of adulteration in diesel.
According to the new price list, diesel becomes dearer by Rs 5.30, kerosene by Rs 10 a litre and cooking gas by Rs 150 per cylinder in the Valley and Rs 130 for Tarai belt.
The price of air turbine fuel (ATF) and petrol will, however, remain the same.
Students and people from lower income bracket will get fixed amount of subsidy on purchase of the petroleum products.
Before hiking the price, the NOC had stalled distribution of all the petroleum products on Monday. It had hiked the price of petrol and air turbine fuel (ATF) just four weeks earlier, citing its burgeoning losses and growing costs in the international market.
Similarly, in October 2007, NOC had increased the price of petrol by nine per cent, diesel by five per cent, kerosene by six per cent and cooking gas by 22 per cent.
Meanwhile, the student groups and consumers Tuesday morning staged protests in various part of the capital against the price hike by the NOC.
