PM rules out fully proportional electoral system

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has ruled out meeting Maoist’s demand of fully proportional electoral system. However, the PM also said discussions were underway among seven political parties to resolve the current political deadlock of the country.

Talking to district presidents of congress, PM Koirlala said other demands of the Maoist could be considered but there was less change of reaching an agreement on proportional electoral system. PM Koirala also accused the Maoists of pushing him into difficulties.

PM Koirala said that he was optimistic in reaching consensus among the parties within a few days. Stating that regressive forces were soaring their heads, the premier said he would do his best to resolve the political deadlock.

Following the differences on electoral system among the political allies, the Election Commission (EC) has extended the deadline of submitting closed list of Constituent Assembly (CA) election candidates based on proportional system.

One of the major allies in the coalition government, Nepali Congress is stick with its stand of mixed electoral system while the CPN-Maoist has been insisting that fully proportional electoral system should be adopted in CA polls.
