Former chief of army staff (CoAS) Pyar Jung Thapa, who was flying to London today has been barred by the airport authorities to leave the country.

According to media reports, Thapa was scheduled to leave for London on a Qatar Airways flight at 8:30am.

Thapa was barred from flying abroad as per the directions of the Home Ministry and the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA); the news report quotes SSP Prakash Kunwar as saying.

The government has decided to bar personnel indicted by the Rayamajhi Commission for their alleged role in suppressing the Jana Andolan II from leaving the country.

Thapa has been accused of misusing over Rs 20 million when he was chief of army staff during the king’s direct rule and playing an active role to suppress the people’s movement last year.

The CIAA has already interrogated Thapa for allegedly misusing the authority.
