Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Rajendra Mahato has said that the government should extend railway link from dry port in Birgunj to Amlekhgunj to ferry petroleum products instead of pouring money into the construction of Raxaul-Amlekhgunj pipeline.

Addressing 31st annual general meeting of Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry organized in Birgunj on Friday, Minister mahato said the country required an investment of two billion rupees to construct the pipeline whereas the extension of the railway line would cost about Rs. 250 million.

Minister mahato also urged the Indian High Commissioner, who was present on the occasion, to support the government's endeavor.

On deregulation of petroleum business, the minister said that the government has not been able to expedite the process due to active engagement in other activities such as the peace process, constituent assembly elections and security management.

However, he also said that the government was serious on opening the petroleum business for the private sector. On the occasion, he also assured that the government would not increase the price of the petroleum product and problem of fuel shortage would be addressed soon.
