The government Monday held an informal meeting with the representatives of the agitating Chure Bhawar Ekta Samaj to fix official dates for the parley to address the demands raised by the group.
In the informal talks, Ram Chandra Poudel, Minister of Peace and Reconstruction and the leader of the talks team, asked the representatives of group to immediately withdraw their ongoing shut down strike and be ready for formal talks.
Samaj’s representatives are learnt to have reiterated their main condition for talks - the release of nine of their friends who were arrested last month. The demands of the Samaj include an ‘autonomous Chure-Bhawar region’, release of its activists and investigation into the loss of lives in recent agitations in Terai.
Earlier today, the government’s team had discussed about the talks process with the Samaj and other agitating groups. Two other government negotiators, state ministers Ram Chandra Yadav and Gyanendra Karki, were also present at the meeting held at the Peace and Reconstruction Ministry in Singh Durbar.
The indefinite bandh called by the Samaj, which continues since one week, has paralysed normal life in Terai districts.
Reports say the bandh has left thousands of passengers stranded at different places along the East West Highway while transport service, businesses and academic institutions have been affected in several districts including Morang, Rautahat, Dhabnusha, Mahottari, Siraha, Saptari and Sarlahi.
