All private and government schools throughout the country remained closed Sunday, on the fourth day of the indefinite school strike called by teachers' and students' unions affiliated with the Maoists.

About 7.8 million students across the country have been affected by the closure.

The teachers have been protesting with their five-point demands which include provision of appointment letters, minimum benefits and annulment of the company act, among others, in order to stop commercialization of the education sector.

The agitating teachers refused to sit for talks earlier with the committee formed by the government.

The government had formed an under-secretary-level panel to hold talks with the agitating teachers in a bid to resolve their problems but the teachers are demanding that a ministerial level committee be formed.
The teachers are demanding to form a ministerial level talks committee.

The teachers have resorted to protests after the tripartite agreement with the education ministry was not implemented.
