United Nations Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Nepal has urged Nepal government to pay attention towards the resolution 1820 adopted by United Nations Security Council on ending sexual violence in situations of conflict.
Issuing a press statement today, the OHCHR said this resolution has important implications for Nepal as the incidents of sexual violence have been unreported during the decade-long conflict in Nepal where the government is in the process of designing transitional justice mechanisms.
The UNSC resolution stresses the need to exclude sexual violence crimes from any provision of amnesty and to ensure that victims of sexual violence have equal protection under the law and equal access to justice. The resolution underscores the importance of ending impunity for such acts as part of a comprehensive approach to seeking sustainable peace, justice, truth, and national reconciliation.
'OHCHR-Nepal encourages the government to protect and promote the rights of women at the legal, policy and programme levels, and to increase its support to victims of sexual violence through the provision of medical, psycho-social and economic support' the statement said.
The OHCHR-Nepal has also urged the government to send a clear message that it intends to do more to support the rights of victims and to punish perpetrators of sexual violence.
