The meeting of seven political parties that was expected to be decisive one held at the Prime Minister’s residence at Baluwatar today ended inconclusively.
Political parties could not hold formal meeting as the leaders failed to reach the consensus on the percentage of the candidacy of proportional and first post-past electoral system in the informal discussions. If the differences will not be met till tomorrow, the country will face constitutional crisis.
Leaders of Seven political parties yesterday claimed that they had already reached the common ground of understandings and they were due to sign in written agreement today. However, they could not reach the consensus.
CPN-ML leader CP Mainali said that leaders of Seven Party Alliance (SPA) could not agree in the technical aspects, especially on the percentage of the electoral systems. He also informed that there were still disagreements on the division of ministerial portfolios.
The leaders of smaller parties were also present at Baluwatar. However, the discussions were held only among Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, Secretary General of CPN-UML Madhav Kumar Nepal and Maoist Chairman Prachanda.
The meeting of four parties of SPA held today morning had decided to adopt proportional electoral system for 60 percent and first post-past for 40 percent. However, the Maoist has been insisting that only fully proportional electoral system should be adopted.
The meeting has been deferred till tomorrow at 8 am.
