The second stage of the stalled verification of the Maoist Peoples' Liberation Army (PLA) has resumed from Tuesday at Dudhauli cantonment in Sindhuli district.
According to a report, the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) team is scheduled to verify 500 PLA combatants Tuesday. There are 2800 PLA men cantoned in different camps in Sindhuli, the report added.
Yesterday, a meeting of the Joint Monitoring Coordination Committee (JTMM) comprising the government, CPN-Maoist and the United Nations representatives held in Lalitpur district on Monday afternoon had took the decision to resume the process from Tuesday.
The second stage verification was stalled over a month ago after the Maoists refused to proceed with it. The second stage verification primarily deals with verification of the combatants to filter out minors and those who joined the Maoist army after 25 May, 2006.
The UN and the Maoists on Monday had also reached an understanding to review the “problems faced during the verification” at Chulachuli in Ilam district.
Following the completion of PLA verification in Ilam on June 27, the Maoist leadership had urged the UNMIN to stop the process, stating that it had some important issues to settle with other political parties.
Later, the Maoist leadership had also urged UNMIN to re-verify their 558 combatants who had been disqualified; UNMIN has reportedly agreed to re-verify 'some' of the combatants.
In the first stage of verification, the UNMIN had registered 30,852 combatants and 3428 arms in seven PLA cantonment sites and 21 satellite camps.
