Following an indefinite general strike imposed by the Chure-Bhawar Ekta Samaj on Monday, all traffic movements in the eastern Terai came to a complete halt.
None of the long-route transport services from the eastern Terai operated Monday.
The Chure-Bhawar Ekta Samaj has warned of a fresh struggle from Monday.
All the passenger buses and trucks that came from the eastern Terai districts – Taplejung, Panchthar, Ilam, Dhankuta, Tehrathum, Jahpa – are jammed at Itahari, Sunsari.
However, some microbuses and minibuses bound for Rajbiraj and Siraha were seen plying the road.
The Chure-Bhawar Ekta Samaj has been demanding separate Chure Bhawar autonomous region.
Following the Samaj's announcement that they would launch another round of struggle from today, Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Ram Chandra Poudel – who is also the coordinator of the government's talks team to hold talks with agitating groups – on Sunday had urged them to cancel their programme.
The Samaj was also invited for the talks. Nonetheless, accusing the government of not paying heed to their demands, the Samaj went ahead to continue with their earlier-decided indefinite strike.
This is not for the first time that the government has called them for the talks. A month ago also the Samaj was asked to come forward to hold the talks, however, it could not happen owing to the government and eight parties' busy schedule.
