The British embassy in Kathmandu on Wednesday has refuted media reports that Prime Minister Gordon Brown has ordered review of Gurkha cases after his meeting with VC winner Tul Bahadur Pun in London a few days ago.
Issuing a press release the British Embassy said, “At no point, however, did the Prime Minister undertake to order a review of the benefits received by former Gurkhas.”
The press released said Prime Minister Gordon Brown reassured Honorary Lieutenant Tul Bahadur Pun VC that Ministry of Defense officials had recently returned from Nepal where they met Gurkha veterans to discuss their concerns and that the Ministry of Defense was considering the issues they raised.
The press release further said the Ministry of Defense recently completed a full and comprehensive review of Gurkha Terms and Conditions of Service, the results of which were announced in March this year, and has no plan to revisit them.
"However at the request of the Government of Nepal, Ministry of Defense officials visited Nepal in April this year to listen to the concerns of the ex-servicemen. A report has been made to the United Kingdom Defense Minister, the outcome of which is expected to be known shortly," the release added.
Earlierm the Gurkha Army Ex-Servicemen's Organization (GAESO) officials on Monday had told a news conference in Kathmandu that Brown gave the order, responding to the request made by Tul Bahadur Pun VC.
