UNDP has signed contract of US$ 4.9 million as a phase two agreement with the Global Fund for the second round of HIV/AIDS grant. The grant will focus on labor migrants and young people aged 10 to 24 years to combat HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
A press release issued on Friday said UNDP the National Centre for AIDS and STIs Control (NCASC) signed US$ 2.3 million Individual Agreement with GFATM as first principle recipient (PR1). Under this agreement UNDP will support and upscale the ongoing HIV and AIDS program. According to UNDP, around 20 NGOs will be reaching over 400,000 labor migrants and their families and 200,000 young people in eight districts. The Beneficiary districts will be Jhapa, Kathmandu, Chitwan, Rupandehi, Dang, Banke, Doti and Accham.
In addition, UNDP will procure HIV/AIDS Drugs and Commodities including Anti Retro Viral (ARVs) for 2007-2008, said the press release.
Earlier in June 2006, UNDP had signed US$ 6.9 million agreement with DFID for continuation of services provided in 2005 to support HIV/AIDS prevention and care activities for the period of 2006-2008.
Since the identification of the first HIV positive case in the country in 1988, the epidemic has been sharply on the rise. Currently, there are 70,256 people estimated to be living with the virus in Nepal. As a key partner to the Global Fund and recipient countries, UNDP is now Principal Recipient (PR) in 30 countries; and manages 70 grants totaling around US $ 600 million for 2 years.
