Head of the United Mission in Nepal (UNMIN), Ian Martin Monday has asked political parties to carry out the responsibility to resume second round of verification process sooner.
Speaking at a press conference at the new office of the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) in Birendra International Convention Centre complex, Martin said that it was the Maoists who agreed upon the criteria of the Agreement on Monitoring the Management of Arms and Armies that was negotiated between the Maoists and the then Seven-Party Alliance government.
Referring his meeting with Maoist chairman Prachanda last Thursday, Martin has said that the parties should take responsibility of the Maoist leader wanted further discussions to take place in the next few days before allowing the second stage of verification in Sindhuli to move forward.
The second phase of the verification process was stalled following the allegations from the Maoists that UNMIN had adopted a Disarmament, Demobilization, Reintegration (DDR) model, which would ‘dissolve’ the Maoist People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
He also said that UNMIN’s electoral advisers have been working very closely with the Election Commission in the run-up to the CA elections.
Stating that the report of the first visit of the United Nations Electoral Expert Monitoring Team (EEMT) that took place from June 11-23 has been submitted, Martin said that the press will be informed about its main findings and recommendations after the report is received by the UN Secretary-General.
