The United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) on Sunday, has refuted media reports that some 400 Maoist People’s Liberation Army (PLA) combatants had been disqualified during the verification process conducted last week at the Chulachuli cantonment sites in Ilam.
In a statement issued by the UNMIN, spokesperson Kieran Dwyer said, “These numbers are not provided by UNMIN, and in fact they are not correct ".
“UNMIN will make figures public, but not at this stage, pending further discussions with the Maoist leadership," he said.
Earlier, media reports said some 400 PLA personnel had to exit from the Chulachuli Camp of Ilam after the second phase verification after the UN team rejected Maoist efforts to increase the number of their army forcefully.
In the UNMIN statement, Dwyer said there are three categories of Maoist army personnel that will be disqualified through the verification process such as those who registered earlier in the year, but did not report for the verification process, those who joined the Maoist army after May 26, 2006 and those born after May 25, 1988.
He also clarified that the verification teams do not include any Nepal Army members.
“The verification teams are fully UN: led by UNMIN arms monitors, with UNICEF child protection officers and UNDP registration personnel,” he said.
UNMIN statement further said the process of verification has been thoroughly and professionally implemented by the UN teams, and that it is ready to commence verification at the second site, in Sindhuli, in accordance with its plans.
The Maoist leadership has asked for some extra time to consider the results of the verification process in Chulachuli, UNMIN said.
