Stop pressurizing and intimidating: UNMIN
The United Nations Mission In Nepal (UNMIN) has urged all the political groups not to intimidate and pressure on voters to vote for or against a particular party. In its report for Constituent Assembly (CA) elections to be held on 10 April, the UNMIN has also urged all political parties to abide by the election code of conduct and respect for human rights of competing parties and voters. 'In the past two weeks in the restive southern Tarai region, there has been an upsurge of killings, violence, intimidation against candidates and voters'- the UNMIN said in its report. The report also said the country's former rebel Maoists, particularly their feared youth wing the Young Communist League, have been preventing campaigning in areas traditionally under their control, which the UNMIN said was creating a climate of fear. UNMIN released the public report to encourage the political parties and all Nepalis to create a free and fair atmosphere for the Constituent Assembly election, said the press release quoting Ian Martin, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Nepal.
