The United States has provided a 2.3 million US dollar grant to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to defend human rights in Nepal. The US provided the grant through the US Agency for International Development (USAID), said US Embassy today.

A press release issued by the US Embassy said the grant was announced on the occasion of International Human Rights Day. The release quoted US Ambassador Nancy J Powell as saying that this 18 month grant demonstrated the American people’s support for critical human rights issues in Nepal.

According to the release, 2.3 million dollars of assistance will be used to strengthen the OHCHR’s operations in Nepal and their efforts to protect the human rights of all Nepalis.

USAID Mission Director Beth Paige stated they supported the Nepal government's commitment to human rights protection for all Nepalis and were dedicated to keeping these issues center-stage as they engage Nepal’s development challenges.
