Outgoing US Ambassador to Nepal, James F. Moriarty on Friday said continuation of violent activities of the Maoist and 'extremist' Madheshi group would derail Nepal’s advancement towards democracy claiming that they were destroying Nepal, its economy and reputation.
Speaking at a valedictory press conference, Moriarty said he made some significant steps in promoting United States' policy of 'creating a peaceful, prosperous and democratic Nepal' opining that stakeholders of political process in Nepal were not serious to achieve this end.
Moriarty said he personally wanted to suggest the King to abdicate if he really wanted to save the institution of monarchy in the country. “The King must take a dramatic step if he wants to save monarchy,” Moriarty said.
Stating that the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, the Interim Constitution, the November 22nd Constituent Assembly elections – all of these agreements and activities held the promise of democratic transformation in Nepal, Moriarty said that country would face trouble until the Maoist and extremist Madheshi stop their violent activities.
Moriarty said that Ambassador Nancy Powell would continue to support the American policy of building a peaceful, prosperous and democratic Nepal.
