The World Press Freedom Day 2007 is being celebrated in Nepal and across the world with the slogan "professional security for journalists" on Thursday.
Every year, May 3 is celebrated as World Press Freedom Day across the globe at the initiative of the UNESCO since 1993.
Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ), Press Union, Press Chautari as well as many other organisations organized various programmes to mark the day with the theme "Fear-free journalism for Loktantra".
The FNJ organized a meeting at the capital's Bhrikutimandap which was addressed by the various journalists.
Addressing the meeting, President of the FNJ Bishnu Nisthuri demanded that the government should immediately implement the laws including the right to information act and working journalists act.
Prior to its meeting, the FNJ had also organized a Prabhat Pheri from Bhrikutimandap that came to a full circle after traversing the city to convert into a meeting.
Issuing a message on the occasion, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala lauded the FNJ's efforts in safeguarding Human Rights and the struggle against autocratic forces.
Similarly a book titled "Banduk Ko Maar Ma Kalam" (Pens in the Line of Fire) prepared by the FNJ on the journalists killed during the decade-long armed insurgency was also launched today.
Speaking during the book launching, UN Resident Coordinator, Matthew Kahane and the Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights for Nepal Lena Sundh expressed regret over the incidences of abduction of journalists.
