WWF grants Rs 7.8 million for biogas project

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Nepal on Monday provided a grant of Rs 7.8 million to the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) for the implementation of the Gold Standard Biogas Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project.

Talking to the press, Sandeep Chamling Rai, programme manager, Climate Change and Energy, said, "This is the first Gold Standard Project (GSP) in Nepal implemented by the WWF for the biogas CDM project."

Rai said that the project will be implemented in the Tarai Arc Landscape (TAL) programme, which will include 43 Village Development Committees in Kailali, Kanchanchanpur, Bardiya, Banke, Dang and Chitwan districts.

Dr Ghana Shyam Gurung, conservation programme director, WWF Nepal, said the WWF Nepal has installed 1,163 biogas plant this year under this project.

According to him, the CDM project will benefit fuel wood dependent and economically disadvantaged rural people and environment.
