NEA to impose up to 12 hours of load shedding daily by April
Gradually extending the existing power cut duration, Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is going to slap up to 12 hours load shedding daily by April. NEA said load shedding up to this measure is essential to adjust the increasing the electricity demand and decreasing power production.
“Daily load shedding of 12 hours can not be avoided in April and May, it is an obligation, consumers have to face tougher days ahead and coping with the growing demands is the big challenge of NEA” managing director of NEA, Arjun Kumar Karki said at a press conference.
Karki also informed that NEA has predicted load-shedding for six hours in February-March, 7-8 hours in March-April and six hours in April-May.
Presently, the electricity demand is 8.6 million units per day while NEA is supplying 7.3 millions units. Of total, production, country’s plants are producing 4.5 million units, 1.9 million units are being imported from India, thermal technology is generating 30,000 units and Kulekhani hydropower is producing 8,00,000 units electricity.
According to Karki, NEA has to resort to load shedding equivalent to 1.3 million units each day. Presently, NEA is cutting power for 21 hours per week per household.
The country's run-of-river projects that can produce 440 MW in total when run at full capacity are producing only 190 megawatts at the moment due to a sharp decline in water level in the rivers.
The Kulekhani projects, which have a combined capacity of 90 MW and are also the only storage type projects in the country, are losing height of water level in their reservoirs due to the pressure to augment power supply.
