Parliamentarians on Monday demanded the government to clarify why it did not discuss the issue related with Upper Karnali Hydro-electric Power Ltd with the eight-party alliance.
Participating in a discussion on the Upper Karnali project, held by the Parliamentary Natural Resources Committee on Monday, the MPs asked the government why the decision to initiate the project by engaging a private party was not made through a consensus among the eight parties.
The MPs said, "The government worked on the issue without the permission from the leadership of the eight political parties and the legislature parliament."
"Our party is a member of the alliance but we were never informed about any discussion on the issue," said MP and chairman of the Left Front, CP Mainali.
"The current government should not take any major decision without having it discussed among the eight-party leadership and the parliament," Mainali added.
On August 12, 2002, the then government had cancelled the licences of Delta Pacific Consortium (PTE) Singapore, Elysee Frontier Ltd and Canadian International Water and Energy Consultants and decided to take over the project with the help of the Indian government.
However, two months ago, the government, citing prolonged inaction on the project, had decided to develop the project with the help of a private party, Upper Karnali Hydro-electric Power Ltd.
