Handicraft exports from Nepal declined by around 5.1 percent in the first half of the current fiscal year. This decline follows the sharp fall in the export of the pashmina, metal and handmade paper products.
According to Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal (FHAN), the country exported handicraft goods worth Rs 1.52 billion in the first six months of 2006/07 compared to Rs. 1.6 billion in the similar period of last fiscal year.
A report quoted Krishna Hada of FHAN as saying that this decline was mainly due to an inability of Nepali goods to compete with comparatively cheaper pashmina products manufactured by Chinese and Indian companies.
He also informed that export of non-textile products, namely metal craft and handmade paper products also declined by 25 percent and 12 percent respectively.
In the first half, the country exported Rs. 182.7 million worth of metal craft and Rs. 119.63 million worth of handmade paper products. Metal craft and handmade paper products account for 12 percent and 8 percent stake in the country's total handicraft exports, respectively.
Likewise, the country exported Rs. 311.81 million worth of woolen goods and Rs. 121.96 million of felt products in first six months of 2006/07. The exports of woolen goods stood at Rs. 410.28 million, in the similar period last year.
