A committee formed by the Maoists has padlocked the Head Box of dam of the Chilime Hydro Power Project (CHPP) forcing the company to stop of electricity generation.

The members of the Chilime Public Concerned Consumers’ Committee (CPCCC) padlocked the Head Box of the project demanding that the project should provide the electricity to the locals free of costs.

The project situated in Rasuwa district has been producing 12 MW electricity though its actual capacity is 20 MW. Electricity generation in the project came to a halt after consumers’ committee closed the Head Box of the dam.

The consumers’ committee has been seeking free electricity facility to the residents of Syaphru, Chilime and Goljhung VDCs. However, project chief Pralhad Chaudhari said that the project could not fulfill the demand as it was against the policy of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).

The project started producing electricity three years ago and is selling power to the NEA as per an agreement.
