The European Commission (EC) has pleaded 2 million euros as emergency relief to Nepal for flood victims. The sum will be focused on the distribution of food rations and the management of drinking water, emergency shelter and healthcare, said EC on Wednesday. The relief will also contribute for the prevention of outbreaks of water-borne diseases, recovery of livelihoods, damaged housing and water-sanitation facilities. "The emergency funds are channelled through the Humanitarian Aid department of the European Commission (ECHO) under the responsibility of Louis Michel, the European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid" a press released issued by EC said. The release quoted Commissioner Michel as saying that many Europeans have experienced flooding in recent years and they knew how important it was to get rapid assistance in such a terrible situation.
"The European Commission has taken strenuous action to provide humanitarian assistance to the victims. We have immediately dispatched our emergency experts to assess the most urgent basic needs and to liaise with other international relief agencies." the release quoted the Commissioner as saying.
In Nepal, torrential monsoon that started from 10 July 2007 caused landslides in the hilly parts of Nepal and severe flooding in the southern plains of the country.
According to the preliminary assessments of NRCS district chapters, 56,000 families (approximately 333,000 people), in more than 44 districts have been affected by landslide and flooding.
More than 472,000 people have been affected while 148 people have lost their life. In the disaster 94 have been injured and more than 24,000 families have been displaced. The landslide and flood also left some 70,000 houses damaged.
EC has also pleaded 4.5 million euros for India and 2.5 million euros for Bangladesh for flood victims. |
